The American justice system indicted former Cuban President Raul Castro on Wednesday for the murder of Americans in 1996, in a move seen as additional pressure on the communist regime to choose “a new path”.

Raul Castro, brother of the late Fidel Castro, is accused, along with others, of conspiring to assassinate Americans in an incident from 1996 involving the shooting down of two civilian planes by Cuban government opponents, resulting in four deaths, according to the indictment.

These opponents were part of an anti-Castro group called “Brothers to the Rescue.” Raul Castro was serving as Minister of Defense at the time.

At 94 years old, he remains a symbol of communist power in Cuba.

President Donald Trump stated that there would be no escalation, as he believes the country is already falling apart. The U.S. Justice Minister, Todd Blanche, expressed expectations that Raul Castro would spend his remaining days in prison in the U.S.

The government of Havana quickly dismissed the indictment as a political maneuver with no legal basis, aimed at justifying a potential military aggression against Cuba.

Tensions between the U.S. and Cuba have been high amid economic and energy crises on the island, exacerbated by longstanding embargoes and blockades.

The indictment was delivered on May 20, a historically significant day for Cuba, marking the anniversary of the country’s independence from Spain in 1902.

While some advocate for a return to a more relaxed stance with Cuba, others support Trump’s hardline approach, particularly in the Cuban-American community in Miami.

Many Cuban exiles have been waiting for this indictment, viewing it as a long-overdue step to address the suffering endured by the Cuban people over the past six decades.
