Teen Takeovers: A New Phenomenon Sweeping the United States

  • The United States is facing a new phenomenon: “teen takeovers,” where teenagers take control of the streets.
  • These gatherings in parks or malls regularly lead to disruptions.
  • Watch the investigation on TF1’s news.

They arrange meetings via social media, officially to party in the streets. For several weeks in the United States, hundreds of teenagers have been flooding the public space with each online invitation. On Friday, May 8, in Tampa, Florida, a similar gathering quickly turned violent when clashes broke out for no apparent reason, leading the police to intervene, as shown in the shocking footage from TF1’s news report. That night, 22 individuals were arrested, with the youngest being just 12 years old.

This phenomenon, spreading rapidly across the country, has a name: “teen takeover.” It now deeply worries American authorities. James Fishback, a Republican candidate for governor of Florida, reacted by stating, “It was not a youth gathering. What happened here on Friday (May 8) was a riot.” Susan Lopez, a prosecutor from this southeastern state in the United States, emphasized, “Participating in these events can lead you to face justice and put your future in danger,” echoing concerns shared by others.

Our video above shows similar incidents occurring in broad daylight, such as on April 20 in California near Hermosa Beach. On May 8, a shopping mall in Houston, Texas, was also overrun. Florida police already fear another violent event and are calling on parents to help them. Lee Bercaw, Tampa’s police chief, highlights, “When large gatherings turn violent, critical resources are diverted from other security emergencies.” Thaddeus Bullard, a local family association leader, encourages parents to organize activities this summer to keep families safe.

Washington, D.C., has imposed a curfew for minors every night until 2028, hoping to see the end of “teen takeovers” by then. This type of spontaneous gathering of teenagers appeared massively in the UK two months ago, leading to serious consequences. However, the phenomenon has not surfaced in France. Still, it echoes the “Project X” gatherings in Paris in 2021 during the Covid crisis, which also required police intervention to disperse the crowd.
