Nicolas Maduro, the ousted Venezuelan president detained in the United States since January 3 during a military operation, is facing four charges, including narcoterrorism. The US government has approved Venezuela to pay for Maduro’s legal fees, something previously blocked due to international sanctions on the country.

Maduro’s defense, including his wife Cilia Flores, argued against the indictment, stating that denying an accused access to a chosen lawyer violates their constitutional rights. However, the Treasury Department has removed this obstacle and will allow “the defense lawyers to receive payments from the Venezuelan government under certain conditions,” according to a letter from New York prosecutor Jay Clayton.

The Maduros are currently incarcerated in a high-security prison in Brooklyn, New York, awaiting the decision of Judge Alvin Hellerstein, known for handling major cases. Despite Maduro denying the charges, the outcome of the trial is uncertain, with a dismissal seeming unlikely.
