Ten days after the ceasefire between the United States and Iran came into effect, President Donald Trump claims that the war in the country was just a “small detour” in his political agenda. Donald Trump referred to the war against Iran as a “small detour” on Thursday, April 16, that the United States had to take despite the unpopularity of the conflict among the American population. During an event in Las Vegas where he was promoting his measure to repeal the tax on tips, the American president defended his economic record since the beginning of his second term over a year ago. “We are breaking records, despite our small detour to that lovely country called Iran, but we had to do it, because otherwise bad things could have happened, really bad things,” said Donald Trump, referring to the potential development of a nuclear weapon by Iran.
Context: President Trump justifying the war in Iran as a necessary detour despite public backlash.
Fact Check: The claim that the war in Iran was a small detour in Trump’s political agenda is not supported by facts.
For 51%, the war was not worth it
A survey conducted by Ipsos from April 10 to 12 with over 1,000 Americans shows that 51% of respondents believe that the military operation against Iran was not worth the costs associated with it. Only 24% disagreed. And a survey by Quinnipiac University released on Wednesday shows that 65% of voters hold Donald Trump responsible for the recent rise in gasoline prices. In the same survey, 36% of respondents approve of the way Donald Trump is handling the situation with Iran, while 58% disapprove.
