In the face of intensified security, economic, and climate crises, Africa emphasizes the priority of African solutions in conflict resolution. By 2025, the continent has over 50 armed conflicts, accounting for nearly 40% of global conflicts, with the Sahel and the Horn of Africa experiencing over half of the 7,555 terrorism-related deaths in 2024. To address this, the African Peace and Security Architecture coordinates continental action through the Peace and Security Council, the Panel of the Wise, and the Continental Early Warning System.

“In the future, we believe that the security situation will remain positive, albeit fragile, with localized risks of violence, particularly when residual armed groups compete for influence and resources. It will also be essential to continue cooperation and support national defense and security forces, in collaboration with the AU, to consolidate progress.” – Humphrey Nyone, MINUSCA Force Commander – Zambia

Driven by Agenda 2063 and the “Silencing the Guns” initiative, the African Union prioritizes preventive diplomacy, political dialogue, and post-conflict reconstruction. Crises in Sudan, the DRC, the Sahel, and Libya have led to the displacement of 45.7 million people since 2020, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated African response.

“The ongoing support of the Security Council will be essential for peacekeeping missions. If we desire lasting peace, we must strengthen the capacities of internal security forces and armed forces.” – Humphrey Nyone, MINUSCA Force Commander – Zambia

Additionally, the economic repercussions of international crises, such as soaring energy prices and threats to food security, further weaken African economies. Faced with these challenges, the continent’s leaders advocate for a more balanced partnership with the United Nations to enhance African resilience, stability, and sovereignty while reinforcing African mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.
