The ceasefire with Iran is “on life support,” according to Donald Trump. He rejected Iran’s response to his plan to end the war on Monday, May 11, deeming Tehran’s demands “completely unacceptable.”

Nothing is moving. Negotiations between the US and Iran have reached a standstill after the demands made by the Iranians on Sunday, May 10. “Is the demand to stop maritime piracy, what they called the blockade, or Iran’s demand to unfreeze Iranian assets, unjustly frozen for years because of the Americans, considered excessive demands? Is ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz an excessive demand?” questioned Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These demands were immediately dismissed in a message posted by Donald Trump: “I just read the response from the so-called representatives of Iran. I don’t like it. It’s completely unacceptable.” After over a month of truce, marred by incidents near the Strait of Hormuz, where each party seeks to assert its authority, diplomatic efforts are faltering.

Furthermore, in southern Lebanon, the IDF continues military operations to secure the buffer zone that isolates Israel from Hezbollah attacks. The tone is not conducive to peace talks. “This war has achieved a lot, but it is not over. There is still uranium that needs to be removed from Iran. And there are still groups supported by Iran and those ballistic missiles they still want to manufacture,” stated Benjamin Netanyahu.

In this context, with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight, oil prices are rising again and the international initiative to secure the strait, co-led by France and the UK around the Charles de Gaulle, seems even more likely to remain on the sidelines of the conflict center.
