Finland easily defeated the United States 6-2 on the 4th day of the World Championship in Switzerland. Canada, the favorite of the competition, waited until the final period to make the difference against Denmark with a 5-1 win.
Following their defeat by Switzerland on Friday, the Americans suffered a second loss in three outings on Monday. Against the defending champion, New Jersey Devils’ forward Lenni Hameenaho delivered a great performance with a brace (7th/22nd) and an assist, helping Finland lead 5-1 after 40 minutes. With the Switzerland vs. Germany game yet to take place (Monday at 8:20pm), the Finns take the lead in Group A.
Canada at the top of Group B
In Group B, Canada and Denmark waited until the final period to settle the score. However, the Maple Leafs squad could rely on their stars Macklin Celebrini (2 assists) and Sidney Crosby (3 assists) to break the deadlock.
The Canadians secured their lead in just 3’33” in the final period, scoring three times against Nicolaj Henriksen to ensure victory. With this third win in three matches (9 points) in the World Championship, they stand alone at the top of the group.
Later in the evening, the Czechs triumphed 4-3 against Sweden with a strong start, leading 3-0 after 13 minutes. After a defeat in overtime against Slovenia on Saturday, the Czech Republic bounces back to second place, just two points behind the Canadian leader.
