On Tuesday, April 14, during the “Grande Matinale” show on France Inter, a politician did not appreciate one of Bertrand Chameroy’s jokes during his segment. Clearly annoyed, he did not hesitate to react live by taking a swipe at the journalist.
The statements did not go over well. Olivier Galzi, the new mayor of Avignon and president of Grand Avignon, was a guest on the “Grande Matinale” show on France Inter on Tuesday, April 14. During Bertrand Chameroy’s segment, a joke about his partner Anaës Haussmann prompted a strong reaction from the elected official, live on air. In his column, the columnist stated, “Congratulations on your election. In addition to being mayor of Avignon, you were also elected head of Grand Avignon, the agglomeration community. First decision: (…) you reduced your salary by 14% and increased the salary of your deputies by 35%, including your partner, so you should benefit if you have a joint account.”
While Bertrand Chameroy continued his segment, Olivier Galzi interrupted him by asking, “Can I respond?” To which the journalist, who also appears on the show “C à vous” on France 5, jokingly replied, “The newspaper will start very late.” Despite this, the mayor of Avignon continued, “It’s 2026 and you still reduce the role of a female public servant to just ‘wife of,’ it’s interesting. She also has skills, I believe that’s why she’s there.” A tense atmosphere ensued.
Since Olivier Galzi decided to increase the salaries of his deputies and councilors by 35%, including his partner Anaës Haussmann, a brand strategy advisor and 13th deputy, the mayor of Avignon has faced numerous criticisms, especially from the opposition. In response to these attacks, the elected official defended himself, pointing out that the salaries amount to 376 euros per month for deputies and 218 euros for councilors. “I clearly have the intention of increasing my deputies. They made commitments to reduce their professional activity. It seemed fair to me to send them a signal in some way,” he explained.
