Iran denounces US naval blockade in letter to UN Iran on Monday denounced a “serious violation of its sovereignty” following the implementation of a maritime blockade by the United States against Iranian ports in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani wrote in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that “the imposition of this maritime blockade constitutes a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The diplomat added that this “illegal measure also constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental principles of maritime law.”

The US’s “illegal” act represents a “serious threat to international peace and security, and manifestly exacerbates the risk of escalation in a very volatile region,” explained Iravani. In a separate letter to the Secretary-General, the Iranian ambassador demanded that countries in the region hosting US military bases pay for “compensation” for allegedly allowing the US to launch “illegal armed attacks targeting civilian targets” in Iranian territory.

Iran demands compensation from Gulf countries In his letter, Iravani stated that Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan “should fully compensate the Islamic Republic of Iran, including compensation for all material and moral damages suffered due to their internationally illegal acts.” He accused these nations of not only allowing the US to strike Iran from their soil, but also of directly carrying out “illegal armed attacks targeting civilian objectives (in Iran)” at times.

These countries, allies of Washington, have denied being involved in or participating in the armed conflict. The massive strikes launched by the US and Israel since the start of the war against Iran on February 28 have destroyed numerous civilian and military infrastructures in Iranian territory and caused an unknown number of casualties. A fragile ceasefire is in place as talks in Islamabad to end the conflict failed on Sunday.
