The first council meeting of Nîmes Métropole since the municipal elections takes place this Tuesday. Not surprisingly, the Communist mayor of Nîmes, Vincent Bouget, was elected as the president of the Agglomeration with 74 votes, compared to 21 for the National Rally (RN) candidate Julien Sanchez.
All 105 community officials were called to come together for the first time on Tuesday at the Nîmes community hotel to elect the president, vice-presidents, and various boards.
Monique Boissière, the oldest elected official of the Agglomeration, opened the session on Tuesday morning. She reminded everyone that “our agglomeration is a community of destiny,” a territory “where it is good to live,” then she called on the youngest mayor, Théo Guigne, the first magistrate of Sauzet, to proceed with the roll call of the officials.
Rémi Nicolas, the left-wing mayor of Marguerittes, presented the candidacy of Vincent Bouget, the Communist mayor of Nîmes, stating, “On behalf of all the mayors of the Agglomeration, I have the honor to present the candidacy of Vincent Bouget, mayor of Nîmes, on behalf of all the mayors of the Agglomeration.”
Thierry Jacob presented the candidacy of Julien Sanchez for the RN. He criticized the “new municipality of Nîmes” for its supposed “sectarianism,” pointing out that it was the mayor of Sauzet and not the youngest elected official from the RN list who made the call. Sanchez mentioned that the elected officials are very concerned about what will happen today as he presented his candidacy, highlighting his experience as a former mayor for 10 years and his knowledge of urban planning documents.
Not surprisingly, Vincent Bouget overwhelmingly won the majority of the votes with 74 votes compared to 21 for Julien Sanchez out of 95 votes cast (with 9 blank and 1 null vote).
“This trust that you give me is both an honor and a great responsibility,” said Vincent Bouget, emphasizing the diversity and strength of each community in Nîmes Métropole. He mentioned that the diversity is a strength and that every municipality and resident will be important in building a strong community.
