Georgia state representative David Scott, a long-time member of the American Congress, has passed away at the age of 80, according to several media sources. He has been in office since 2003 and has been elected twelve times, making him the fourth Democrat of the lower house of the American Parliament to die in office.
A businessman and former legislator from the state of Georgia, he was running for a thirteenth consecutive term in Congress, after becoming in 2021 the first black chairman of the agriculture committee of the House of Representatives. The causes of his death have not been disclosed yet.
“Pioneer”
House minority leader, New York representative Hakeem Jeffries, paid tribute to him on Wednesday. “David Scott was a pioneer who served his district admirably,” he said. “He cared about the people he represented. He was fiercely committed to moving things forward for the people of the great state of Georgia, and he will be deeply missed.“
David Scott’s last vote was on Tuesday: he approved a bill on hydroelectric projects. The harsh political reality: his vacant seat now gives Republicans an advantage for the upcoming November midterm elections, which are expected to be very close. The balance of power in the House now stands at 217 Republicans, 212 Democrats, and one independent, who sits with the Republicans.
