The new municipal majority of Vierzon, resulting from an extreme right union, chose not to organize the May 10 commemoration dedicated to the abolition of slavery. For what reasons?

The town hall of Vierzon, a town in Cher led since March by a far-right union list, explained that it did not organize the commemoration of the abolition of slavery on Sunday for reasons of budgetary savings and the lack of interest of the inhabitants.

“The list of 12 national memorial days does not include this day of commemoration of slavery“, Yves Husté, deputy mayor of Les Républicains (LR) and delegate for memory and veterans, declared to AFP on Sunday.

Why did the mayor cancel this day of commemoration?

To justify this decision which sparked controversy, Mr Husté also noted that “no one came” à cette journée de commémoration. “I think it’s because it’s a historical fact that has no connection with the present”also argued the elected official to explain the low interest of the city’s inhabitants for May 10.

The other argument put forward by the elected official is the state of the finances of the town of 25,000 inhabitants. “with a debt of 32 million euros” et “2.5 million unpaid bills”.

“We need to find savings to avoid being placed under supervision and we are trying to find them everywhere”he added, specifying that the cost of this ceremony would have been around 1,500 euros.

“Don’t let anything pass”

The PC deputy of Cher and former mayor of the city, Nicolas Sansu, organized a ceremony with laying of flowers, speeches and readings of poems.“Faced with the small touches aimed at weakening the Republic, at revising its History, through ‘opportune oversights’, it is the duty of all progressives and Republicans not to let anything slip through.“, indicated the communist deputy on Facebook.

M. Husté a dit “understand those who are attached” on this commemorative day, specifying that they did not prevent the ceremony organized by the former mayor from taking place.

Left-wing city since the end of the Second World War

At the end of March, a far-right union list won the municipal election in Vierzon, a left-wing town since the end of the Second World War and communist since 2008.

The candidacy of Yannick Le Roux, a 50-year-old police officer, at the head of a list bringing together elected officials from the RN and Reconquête!, obtained 47.87% of the votes cast in this sub-prefecture of the department.
