Before getting bogged down in the war in Iran, Donald Trump had his eye on Greenland.

  • The White House tenant declared several times wanting to annex the Danish autonomous territory.
  • In recent days, a mysterious American citizen reportedly attempted to bribe Greenlanders.

The war in Iran had made people forget about Donald Trump’s threats to conquer Greenland. A few months later, a mysterious American citizen made headlines for trying to buy residents of this island, still a Danish territory.

We don’t know his face, he keeps a low profile. Just his name: Cliff. Unidentified, he reportedly offered 200,000 dollars (about 170,000 euros) to Greenlanders to sign a petition in favor of their autonomous Danish territory joining the United States.

“A foreigner is offering money for a signature aiming to annex Greenland to another country. This is not only deeply worrying. It’s indecent,” said Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Thursday, May 7. “We are a democratic society. Our future is not negotiated in a taxi. And it’s not bought with money.”

It’s not only deeply worrying (…) and indecent

“It may be a ‘false flag’ operation, to designate a covert American operation that isn’t one. But since Americans are not newcomers to Greenland, it is also quite possible that this is a destabilization operation,” explains LCI’s Vincent Crouzet, a former intelligence agent and writer.

Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the United States must annex the Arctic island to ensure their national security. Last January, he backtracked after several weeks of aggressive rhetoric, and announced that he had reached a framework agreement on Greenland with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. But the details of this agreement remain unclear. Denmark and Greenland are in talks with Washington about the future of the autonomous territory.
