It is an unusual operation that will take place on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at Terres de Nataïa, an animal park located in Pont-Scorff (56). Chandru, the young Asian elephant who arrived at the end of 2025, will undergo surgery after being injured in a tusk. “It’s a risky operation but we have no choice, there is a risk of infection,” said Sébastien Musset, general manager. An operation that also has a cost: nearly 10,000 euros.
It was while playing with Minky, another young male in the park, that Chandru was injured, from Sunday night to Monday. “It’s a bit like having an exposed nerve in a tooth,” said Sébastien Musset. The park teams secured the animal and took necessary measures to “limit the risks and provide initial care.”
Four specialists
The injury to the young elephant requires surgery. However, operating on a 7-year-old elephant weighing over three tons is not easy. This Wednesday, a team of 25 people will be mobilized: a specialized veterinarian and park keepers, firefighters, and external veterinarians. “There are two European specialists in dentistry for wild animals, including elephants, and two veterinarians from Nantes specializing in wildlife,” said Sébastien Musset. On Tuesday evening, Terres de Nataïa informed visitors. “For the sake of transparency and to avoid surprise.”
