After more than a month of a ceasefire, diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran remain stalled. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has reevaluated the cost of the conflict.

The Pentagon has recalculated the cost of the war in Iran to nearly $29 billion, as announced by its financial officer during a recent congressional hearing with US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth.

This amount has increased by about $4 billion compared to the estimate provided two weeks ago during a previous meeting with American lawmakers, which was the first hearing with the Pentagon chief since the beginning of the war in late February.

“At that time, it was $25 billion. But the military staff and the financial controller are constantly reviewing the estimates, and we now believe it is closer to $29 billion,” explained financial officer Jules Hurst, alongside Pete Hegseth and the US Army Chief of Staff, General Dan Caine.

The “largest energy shock ever” according to Aramco

The US and Israel launched a major offensive against Tehran on February 28th. A ceasefire has been in effect for over a month, but Donald Trump described it as being on “life support” on Monday. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran to permanently end the war in the Middle East are ongoing.

Outside the US, the head of Saudi oil giant Aramco has stated that the war, which has resulted in thousands of deaths mainly in Iran and Lebanon, has triggered the “largest energy shock” ever experienced in the world.
