A powerful Russian weapon turned against the Russian army. The Ukrainian army has released images showing a Russian self-propelled gun captured on the front line and put back into service by the 24th Ukrainian brigade. The artillery system was redeployed, but this time against Russian positions, around Tchassiv Yar, in the Donetsk region.

In the images published and relayed by the Ukrainian media Defense Express, we see Ukrainian soldiers preparing the gun, loading it with shells, and opening fire towards Russian positions.

“A formidable weapon thanks to its firepower and range”

The 24th Ukrainian brigade indicates that the 152mm gun had been seized on another part of the front line. Rather than dismantling it to recover spare parts, they chose to repair it to integrate it into their operations.

For the occasion, the gun was baptized “Kraken,” symbolizing its new role under Ukrainian command. The brigade congratulated itself, saying “the weapon now turns against its former owners.”

The 2S5 Giatsint-S, valued at over $4 million (approximately €3.4 million), is one of the Soviet-designed artillery systems with the longest firing range still actively used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Armed with a 152mm gun, it can reach targets several tens of kilometers away, depending on the type of ammunition used. Despite its age, the “system remains a formidable weapon thanks to its firepower and range,” according to Defense Express.

Last week, Ukrainian drone operators explained that they had destroyed a Russian self-propelled artillery system 2S5 Giatsint-S using simple FPV attack drones. This time, it was the 33rd Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine that congratulated itself on its successful maneuver.
