- This new system promises shorter production timelines.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth plans to revolutionize negotiations with defense subcontractors by establishing a new team called “Deal Team Six.” This elite group, composed of experienced business professionals from the private sector, will oversee all aspects of relations with defense subcontractors with the aim of securing better terms for American taxpayers.
Criticism of Previous Operations
Hegseth criticizes the old Pentagon bureaucracy that allowed subcontractors to exploit the system. He claims that subcontractors charged taxpayers twice: once for the initial construction of the facility and a second time for the final product delivery. According to him, this practice led to constant delays and cost overruns, while subcontractor CEOs benefited significantly.
The Deal Team Six team operates within the Pentagon’s Economic Defense Unit, established in early April 2026. Hegseth first proposed the creation of this unit in a November 2025 memorandum outlining plans to modernize procurement practices. The new system, named the “arsenal of freedom,” replaces the old Defense Acquisition System with a Combat Capability Acquisition System designed to accelerate project timelines and increase production.
Financial Support
The Deal Team Six initiative has received significant financial backing. The 2026 National Defense Authorization Act allocated over $266 million for research, development, testing, and evaluation of the unit. President Donald Trump’s proposed defense budget for 2027 also earmarks over $593 million to support Deal Team Six operations.
