Netflix’s strategy to expand the Narnia saga includes a new film adaptation of the first book by C.S. Lewis, “The Magician’s Nephew.” Originally set for a late 2026 release, the movie directed by Greta Gerwig will now hit US theaters on February 12, 2027, for a three-week run before streaming on Netflix starting April 2. IMAX previews start on February 10.

This project is a significant endeavor for the director of “Barbie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide. With a budget of $200 million, the film has been in development for three years and filming since August 2025.

Netflix’s upcoming “Narnia” aims to revitalize the franchise for a new generation, following previous adaptations released between 2005 and 2010 by Disney and 20th Century Fox. However, it’s uncertain whether the same simultaneous release strategy will apply in France due to media regulations requiring a one-year wait between theater and online releases.

The story of “The Magician’s Nephew” serves as a prequel to “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,” set in Victorian London and featuring two children who stumble upon magical rings leading to different worlds. Expect this film to be the first of a potential eight-movie franchise.
