The newly realigned dune at Broadkill Beach has been completed, as reported by DNREC. This project involved moving sand and redesigning the dune structure, resulting in a transformed coastline and improved beach access.
Previously, the area had steep and uneven terrain, but now it features a gradual slope leading to the beach, eliminating sharp drop-offs and unstable sand cliffs for easier visitor access.
The project also widened the beach by realigning part of the original dune further inland and installing fencing and new dune grass to stabilize the area. Visitors have praised the new look, with one noting the beautiful, wide beach perfect for walking.
State officials emphasized that the redesign not only enhances the beach’s appearance but also strengthens it against storms and tidal impacts. The fortified dune system is expected to last longer and provide increased protection for nearby homes.
Some visitors expressed hopes for a ramp to improve accessibility along the dunes in the future, along with additional amenities at the main beach access point for the benefit of the town.
DNREC has no immediate plans to rebuild a ramp or other structures at the main beach access point, but those seeking more information on the project can visit DNREC’s website.
