The USS Spruance, a US Navy warship, recently fired on and intercepted an Iranian cargo vessel. The Spruance is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer equipped with a 5-inch gun used for various targets. The gun was deployed in 1971 and has a range of 15 miles. It can fire up to 20 rounds per minute and is reloaded by the crew for continuous use.

In addition to the 5-inch gun, the Spruance carries torpedoes, Tomahawk missiles for land attacks, Standard interceptors for ballistic missile defense, and Sea Sparrow missiles for short-range missile and aircraft defense. With a displacement of around 9,000 tons and a length of over 500 feet, the ship has a crew of 329. The Spruance is part of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and is based in San Diego. It is named after Adm. Raymond Spruance, a key figure in the Battle of Midway during World War II.
