Giorgia Meloni’s shift in foreign policy has led to a closer relationship with the European Union and a clear move away from the current American administration. Meloni made a mistake thinking she could serve as a “bridge” between the United States and the European Union, but now realizes that, for Trump, Italy is no more a part of the European Union than Spain under Pedro Sánchez.
“It is wise to rectify,” even if Meloni, a Roman, is not wise, she made a wise decision. She is now participating in meetings alongside Friedrich Merz (Germany), Emmanuel Macron (France), and Keir Starmer (United Kingdom), even though the UK is no longer part of the EU, geographically still in Europe, and a significant military power.
As expected, Donald Trump expressed disappointment towards Meloni, but any association with the “warmonger” Trump is causing losses in elections or referendums. Meloni was not wrong to support the Republican Party, but Trump represents MAGA, a faction within the Republican Party advocating “Make America Great Again.”
Trump unintentionally united the 27 European countries on a common foreign policy line, although the EU diplomacy head Kaja Kallas remains absent. It is well known that effective EU diplomacy requires a strong European army, and while a “United States of Europe” may never exist, progress can be made in banking and monetary union.
Meloni, once a Eurosceptic, now a pro-European, is utilizing EU funds for economic modernization aligned with digital and environmentally friendly policies. Her strategic advisor, Raffaele Fitto, was appointed as vice president of the European Commission, indicating Meloni’s prioritization of EU relations.
Meloni’s change in foreign policy creates a positive outlook for Italy as it strengthens ties with the EU. This shift may increase her chances in the upcoming 2027 elections, positioning her center-right party, along with allies, for potential victory.
In response to recent setbacks, Meloni decided to modify her foreign policy stance. Her party, Fratelli d’Italia, holds steady support in voter estimations, positioning her for electoral success. Renewed relations with the US can wait, as Meloni’s astute foreign policy adjustment deserves recognition.
