On Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 6 pm, the Cercle de conférences et d’histoire locale d’Agon-Coutainville (CCHL-AC) will host its next event at the cultural space Daniel-Rouland. Michel Boivin, a well-known friend and neighbor of the association from Blainville-sur-Mer (Manche), will address the audience on historical culture.

Michel Boivin, a historian, sociologist, and political scientist, emeritus professor at universities, will tackle a sensitive topic 80 years later: World War II in our department. His conference is titled “Critiques of received ideas about the funny war, occupation, and liberation of Manche between 1939-1945.”

This expert will analyze and shed light on the behaviors of the people of Manche faced with the confusing effects of the “funny war” in 1939-1940, and the strong German occupation for four years, which they struggled to endure.

René Gautier, communication officer at CCHL-AC, stated that he will also challenge misconceptions about the liberation, during which a third of the people of Manche were forced to flee, contrary to national and international media images. Misconceptions about collaboration and purification will also be contested by many, who believe it mostly affected scapegoats rather than true responsible parties.

According to René Gautier, this conference will allow everyone to go beyond preconceived opinions and fragmented media views, to dive into the reality of the time and discover its controversies and misunderstandings.

In other words, a true lesson in local and world history! This event will provide an opportunity to explore the collection of books published by Michel Boivin on this period and to share a moment of conviviality after the conference.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 6 pm, at the cultural space Daniel-Rouland in Agon-Coutainville. Entry fee is 7 euros, free for members and students under 25 years old. Website: cchlagon.ovh; email: [email protected].
