Spanish rider Alex Marquez, who suffered two fractures after his violent crash at the Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday, will miss the next two Grands Prix in Italy and Hungary, his team Gresini Racing announced on Thursday. “Alex Marquez will miss the Mugello Grand Prix (May 31) and the Balaton Grand Prix (June 7),” Gresini said on their social media, with a photo of the Spanish rider smiling, his right arm in a sling and wearing a neck brace.
The Gresini rider, younger brother of world champion Marc Marquez, could make his comeback at the earliest at the Czech Republic Grand Prix on June 21, if his injuries heal well. He was successfully operated on Sunday night for fractures to a vertebra and his right collarbone.
Alex Marquez had a dramatic crash on Sunday after colliding at full speed with his fellow Spanish rider Pedro Acosta, whose bike abruptly slowed down in the middle of the straight due to a mechanical issue. The younger Marquez brother then crashed at very high speed and his bike tumbled before falling apart on the track, leading to the race being red-flagged.
