In the latest international news bulletin this morning, on May 21, the main developments focus on the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump in China, the tense phone call between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Iran, the outcome of Putin’s visit to Beijing, Cuba’s reaction to the U.S. decision, and the disembarkation and search by the U.S. military of an Iranian-flagged ship in the Gulf of Oman.
Kremlin: Putin and Trump could meet in November.
According to Yury Ushakov, a Kremlin adviser, Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump could meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit in China in November, although no formal discussions have been planned yet.
President Putin, who recently completed a two-day visit to China, confirmed to Chinese President Xi Jinping that he would attend the APEC summit in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19. Additionally, President Trump is also considering attending.
“If the two leaders are in China, they could meet and have some kind of exchange,” said Ushakov.
If it happens, this meeting would be the next one between the two leaders since the Alaska summit in August 2025 – the first face-to-face meeting between the Russian and American leaders since the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict.
Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister had a tense phone conversation about Iran.
On May 19, American President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a tense phone call concerning the possibility of ending the conflict with Iran.
According to Axios, Netanyahu expressed doubts about Tehran’s ability to comply with any agreement regarding its nuclear program, as well as its commitment not to attack Gulf states.
Sources indicate that the Israeli Prime Minister hopes to resume military operations to further weaken Iran’s military capabilities and pressure the regime in Tehran.
Meanwhile, Trump continued to assert that a diplomatic solution was still possible but warned that Washington was ready to resort to military action if Iran did not make concessions during negotiations.
“I want to end a war if it can save lives,” said Trump on May 20.
Putin’s visit to China yielded significant results.
Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his two-day state visit to China by signing a series of important cooperation agreements between the two countries.
During their meeting of more than three hours at the Great Hall of the People, Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping focused their discussions on topics ranging from trade and energy to international security.
Putin stated that bilateral exchanges exceeded $240 billion last year and emphasized that energy remains a key driver of Russian-Chinese cooperation.
According to the Kremlin, the two parties reached an agreement on the key parameters of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project.
Over 40 intergovernmental and commercial agreements were signed in the fields of energy, transportation, nuclear technology, artificial intelligence, education, and media.
The two leaders also reaffirmed their position against hegemony and the “law of the jungle” in international relations and emphasized the need to address the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict.
American troops disembark and search Iranian-flagged ships in the Gulf of Oman.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on May 20 that soldiers from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit had boarded the Iranian-flagged tanker Celestial Sea in the Gulf of Oman.
According to CENTCOM, the ship is suspected of attempting to enter an Iranian port, thereby violating the maritime blockade imposed by the United States.
The video footage shows American soldiers deployed by helicopter before approaching and searching the ship. After the inspection, the vessel was allowed to continue after receiving an order to change course.
This is the fifth ship to undergo a land inspection by the United States since Washington launched its blockade campaign against Iran in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM stated that the blockade campaign forced at least 91 commercial vessels to alter their routes.
