Revival of the Women’s Football Section at US Jarny Football Club
It had experienced a meteoric rise since its inception. “In two seasons, the women’s section had gone from two to 80 players,” recalls Julien Féry, president of Union Sportive Jarny Football. With a peak of 90 players. “We managed to have teams for U13, U15, U18, and seniors. […] Now, it has taken a hit,” he adds.
With 53 licensed players today (out of the club’s total of 370), only two categories are still active. The U16s, despite some “small staffing issues.” And the U13s, which Julien Féry has been coaching again since January. “We managed to create two teams and the results are pretty good,” he says. The young female footballers have even reached the regional final of the U13 Pitch Festival, organized by the French Football Federation, alongside teams from Metz, Nancy, and Strasbourg. “We have three girls from our club who have gone to FC Metz, and six who are currently in trials in Meurthe-et-Moselle,” also highlights the president. “Behind ASNL, we are the club with the most [players].”
A Girls’ Football School?
These positive news contrast with the rest of the categories, which have stopped due to a lack of players. The goal now is to regain the former momentum and have at least one team in each category. “Then, within two or three years, to be optimistic, be able to offer both recreational and slightly more elite levels,” projects Julien Féry.
To achieve this, what will the club do? “In June, we will have open days. We welcome beginners as well as more experienced players,” he says. For the younger ones, the reopening of a girls’ football school is being considered. “When we did it, many girls came.” Finally, the current club leader will step down as president next season to focus on the women’s section, which he initiated. He may also coach the U16s and seniors. “It’s really enjoyable to coach girls, they listen,” he says.
