Saint-Etienne: Ultra groups facing dissolution
The fate of the Magic Fans and Green Angels, two ultra supporters’ groups of AS Saint-Etienne, is currently under discussion following the announcement of a dissolution procedure by the Ministry of the Interior on April 13.
While the specific accusations against the Verts supporters remain unclear, prefectural bans on travel frequently cite seat damage in the stands, use of pyrotechnic devices, skirmishes among fans, and incidents at highway rest areas. Despite these reprehensible actions, the incredible enthusiasm and creativity displayed by these passionate supporters in the “Chaudron,” the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, during every match should not be overlooked. The Magic Fans in the north end and Green Angels in the south end excel in their tifos and support their team for the full 90 minutes.
Political support without politicization
Local officials and parliamentarians across political spectrums believe that the leaders of these ultra groups are crucial partners for the club and law enforcement. This was demonstrated by the presence of various political figures, from the mayor of Saint-Etienne to senators, at a gathering of 4,300 people on April 11 to show support for the groups.
Earlier on April 2, the Saint-Etienne mayor and 10 regional parliamentarians, spanning various political affiliations, expressed their strong opposition to the government’s decision to activate the dissolution procedure in a letter to the Interior Minister. They highlighted the potential negative impacts on public order, the loss of essential communication channels, and increased legal disputes that could result from such a decision. The club president, Yvan Gazidis, also voiced his support, emphasizing that dissolving the supporter groups is not a security strategy.
These organized groups, free from politicization, likely help to manage and supervise the most enthusiastic supporters. Additionally, their charitable activities, such as fundraising for cancer research and collecting food donations during the pandemic, contribute significantly to the social cohesion of the city.
