For three days, the 61st artillery regiment in Semoutiers-Montsaon (Haute-Marne) hosted the first international military drone challenge organized by the French Army on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 May. A total of 37 French teams and 11 allied teams from NATO competed in real-life scenarios.
Wearing virtual reality helmets, the military guided their drones at full speed through obstacles, buildings, and targets to reach. The event took place at the 61st artillery regiment in Semoutiers-Montsaon near Chaumont, Haute-Marne. Around a hundred participants, including 37 French teams and 11 allied teams from NATO countries such as the UK, Poland, Italy, Denmark, and the US, gathered at the base.
The challenges allowed teams to test their equipment realistically and identify technical flaws before operational training. Teams navigated complex courses, entered buildings, and reached targets using FPV drones controlled with video goggles. A significant role during the challenges was guiding the pilot, especially in case of lost drone connection.
This event aimed to compare work methods between units and allied countries. It also served as an opportunity for companies and startups to showcase military drone technologies. The French Army’s adaptation to technological advancements, especially with drones, was highlighted as a strategic priority.
The French Army is increasing its drone resources significantly, with plans to purchase 15,000 drones this year. The rapid technological advancements in drones were emphasized, indicating a significant shift in military capabilities within a short period.
