After the shooting incident involving White House correspondents on Saturday, April 25 in Washington, national unity is starting to crack as the main suspect, Cole Allen, was charged with attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Monday, April 27. He faces life imprisonment. The wave of support and condemnation of violence in politics has subsided. Tensions have clearly escalated between the White House and the Democrats, leading to divisions within the American political class.

Some Republican officials criticized the left, while Donald Trump, in an interview a few hours later, took a swipe at the media and Democrats. Melania Trump set the tone by accusing talk show host Jimmy Kimmel of spreading hatred and violence, referring to a joke he made two days before the gala where he compared her to a widow-to-be. Melania Trump labeled it as a “repugnant call to violence.”

In response to this, President Trump called for the dismissal of the ABC channel host, emphasizing his anti-media and anti-Democrat rhetoric. This sentiment was echoed by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who stated, “The cult of hatred from the left against the president and all those who support and work for him has caused numerous injuries and deaths and almost struck again this past weekend.”

These statements sparked anger from the House of Representatives Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries, who denounced Leavitt as a “disgrace and a shameless liar.” He highlighted the violence of the MAGA movement and criticized Leavitt for trying to lecture America on civility. The previous day’s tone of unity and conciliation seems to have dissipated.
