One Dead, Career Ruined: Surgeon Indicted for Fatal Medical Error

A tragedy unfolded in the United States, resulting in one death and a ruined career. A surgeon is facing charges after a medical mistake with dire consequences. As reported by ABC News, a grand jury in Florida has indicted Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky for second-degree involuntary manslaughter. The official announcement was made by the prosecutor on Tuesday.

The incident dates back to August 21, 2024, when the doctor was performing a laparoscopic splenectomy on a 70-year-old patient from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Authorities stated that he mistakenly removed the liver instead of the spleen, causing a massive hemorrhage.

The patient succumbed to fatal hemorrhagic shock on the operating table. Investigators believe that the evidence warrants criminal charges, based on an analysis of the circumstances and actions taken during the procedure.

Following the tragedy, the physician’s medical license was suspended in Florida. Additionally, he voluntarily ceased practicing in Alabama as a revocation process was initiated.
