The flexibility of the metal bracelet, hard stone dial, and Manufacture mechanical movement: this new version of the Santos-Dumont watch revitalizes Alberto Santos-Dumont’s dandy heritage, known for his uniqueness and attention to detail. “The new Santos-Dumont watch emphasizes its loyalty to the original shape and its fluid and precious bracelet, affirming an expression of contemporary elegance,” says Pierre Rainero, Director of Image, Style, and Heritage.

Faithful to the elegance and pioneering spirit of the original model created in 1904 to catch the aviator’s eye so he could read the time in-flight, it cultivates the same codes: Roman numerals, visible screws, beaded crown, and blue cabochon. A design classic, this first modern wristwatch designed to be worn on the wrist is now the subject of a reinterpretation with vintage accents that have brought together a range of craftsmanship, from the most traditional to the most innovative within the Cartier Manufacture.

The centerpiece, the dial of this new larger version of the Santos-Dumont watch, is made of gilded obsidian. A lapidary feat, this volcanic stone from Mexico owes its iridescent reflections to tiny air bubbles trapped in the material, making each watch a unique piece. With a thickness of 0.3 mm, its delicacy is comparable to glass and poses a major challenge for craftsmen. After cutting, the stone is polished to reveal its most beautiful shine.
