The United States has not abandoned their expansionist ambitions in Greenland.

In a visit to Nuuk, the U.S. commissioner Jeff Landry confirmed that American ambitions in the strategic Arctic territory remain unchanged. Landry concluded his visit to Greenland by stating that it is “time to leave our mark.” Despite recent tensions with Iran, President Trump has not forgotten about Greenland. On Sunday, Landry, accompanied by a group of officials, made an unexpected visit to Nuuk, where he aimed to make friends. Although initially met with a lack of enthusiasm, official meetings between the U.S. delegation and Greenland authorities eventually took place, showcasing America’s continued interest in the region. However, rather than straightforward annexation, the U.S. is now aiming for a form of guardianship over Greenland, which is currently under Danish administration. The U.S. is requesting significant control over investments and mineral exploitation, as well as the establishment of military bases without a time limit, in the name of national security. Landry also inaugurated a new American consulate during his visit, symbolizing America’s growing presence in Greenland. This approach has raised concerns among European allies, especially as the administration has announced the withdrawal of troops from Germany. Landry will need to convince and reassure various stakeholders as the U.S. strengthens its position in Greenland amidst shifting military priorities, especially in the face of Russian threats in Eastern NATO countries. Landry’s next task is to address these concerns at the upcoming NATO summit in June.
