Other times, other weapons: it is no longer a question of Russian missiles on the island, but of drones. Cuba has indeed acquired more than 300 military drones and is evaluating possible scenarios for their use near the American base of Guantanamo in the east of the island, as reported by the American media Axios, citing classified intelligence. According to Axios, this information has raised concerns in Washington, where officials warn of a “growing threat” due to the proximity of these capabilities.
At the same time, the Cuban government accuses Washington of laying the political groundwork for a military intervention against the island, which, if materialized, would “trigger a bloodbath with incalculable consequences,” denounced Miguel Díaz-Canel.
“Neither plans nor aggressive intentions”
The Cuban leader also reaffirmed that his country “does not represent a threat and has neither plans nor aggressive intentions” towards other nations.
President Donald Trump considers the communist island, located 150 kilometers off the coast of Florida, to be “an exceptional threat” to the national security of the United States. He has made numerous threats to “take control” of Cuba and has even mentioned the possibility of sending an aircraft carrier.
Despite the embargo imposed against Cuba since 1962, Washington added a tanker blockade in January that restricts the island’s crude oil supply, only allowing the arrival of one Russian tanker with about 100,000 tons of crude oil in late March.
In early May, Donald Trump approved a new package of sanctions against the island.
