Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, one of the few conservative elected officials to support Donald Trump’s impeachment after the Capitol attack in 2021, was defeated in a primary in Louisiana, showcasing the president’s influence over his party. This defeat symbolizes a setback for the moderate wing of the Republican Party and highlights Donald Trump’s grip on the party despite internal divisions caused by the war with Iran and economic concerns undermining his presidency.

At 68 years old, Bill Cassidy only finished third in the primary, trailing behind the candidate supported by Donald Trump, Julia Letlow. This means he will not participate in the runoff scheduled for June 27, dimming his chances of securing a third term. In a democratic system, sometimes the result is not what you desire, as expressed by the outgoing senator. However, he encouraged acceptance and refrained from complaining or implying election theft, making a clear reference to Trump without directly naming him.

Shortly after the projections were announced, Trump praised Cassidy’s defeat on his Truth Social platform, highlighting the senator’s disloyalty and declaring an end to his political career. Cassidy, known as one of the most independent Republican voices in Congress, faced enduring animosity from Trump for voting to impeach the billionaire, leading to a significant loss of Republican voter support.

While Trump’s popularity has waned in recent opinion polls, his influence remains significant in Republican primaries. In Indiana earlier this month, five of the seven incumbent Republican officials who refused to support Trump’s agenda were ousted by loyal supporters of the former president. Trump has shifted his focus to another Republican opponent in Congress, Thomas Massie, vying for an eighth term in the House of Representatives in Kentucky, where he faces a contentious primary against a Trump-backed rival.

Trump called for the removal of Massie, labeling him a troublemaker and urging Kentucky voters to reject him. Massie, who introduced a bipartisan resolution against the war in Iran, faced criticism from Trump for being involved in the Epstein case. In an interview on ABC, Massie accused billionaires of funding the campaign to secure a seat for Trump, implying that the president’s obsession with the issue stemmed from desperation caused by financial support manipulation.
