Donald Trump wants to open Fort Knox to physically verify the US gold reserves. The US gold stock is estimated at nearly $700 billion.

The American president has a new whim. In a recent interview with Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson, Donald Trump mentioned his wish to personally inspect the highly secure site of Fort Knox (Kentucky) to verify the presence of the gold held by the federal state. An initiative supported at the time by Elon Musk, then director of the Department of Governmental Efficiency.

“We wanted to go knock on the door of Fort Knox, a very thick door, to see if we had gold inside,” he said. The American president simply wants to ensure that the country’s gold is indeed there and has not been looted. These reserves, estimated at about 147 million ounces, would represent approximately $700 billion at the current price of gold, according to the New York Post. “I wonder if they left the gold at Fort Knox because they steal a lot,” added the real estate magnate without specifying who allegedly stole the reserves.

An inspection dating back to 2017?

The Fort Knox site, managed by the Treasury Department, is considered one of the most secure places in the world. American authorities ensure that the reserves are regularly counted and verified. But in the face of restricted access to its vaults, several voices have been raised to question the authorities’ word.

It is unknown when the last known “audit” of the establishment took place. In 1974, journalists were allowed to visit the premises and in 2017, the then Treasury Secretary visited Fort Knox. Meanwhile, no official date for Donald Trump’s visit has been confirmed by the White House.
