The US Department of Defense announced Friday, May 8, that it has released a first batch of documents on UFOs that were previously classified as defense secrets. More documents are expected to be released regularly.
This move is likely to attract a lot of curiosity. The US Department of Defense (recently renamed the Ministry of War) announced on Friday, May 8, that it made public a first batch of documents on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that were previously kept secret, allowing the public to “ultimately form their own opinion.”
“These documents, hidden behind defense secrets, have long fueled speculations, and it is time that the American people can have direct access to them,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a statement published on X. He explained that the publication is the result of collaborative work by the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Energy, NASA, and the FBI.
According to the statement, the ministry’s website where these documents are published will be regularly updated with new documents.
“While past governments sought to discredit or deter the American people, President Trump is committed to ensuring maximum transparency to the public, which can ultimately form its own opinion on the information contained in these files,” the statement said, mentioning Donald Trump several times.
President Trump, who is fascinated by UFOs, had announced that he intended to order federal agencies to “identify and publish” records relating to aliens and UFOs in February, “given the great interest sparked by these topics.”
Experts have already called for caution regarding the release of these documents, as they may be misinterpreted by those unfamiliar with high-tech military capabilities, according to AP.
In 2022, a task force was created by Congress to declassify documents on UFOs. Its first report, released in 2024, revealed the existence of numerous new “unidentified abnormal phenomena” but also rejected claims that the government has knowledge of extraterrestrial technologies and did not confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life.
