The decision of the American Ministry of the Interior is part of the Trump administration’s energy policy, which is firmly focused on fossil fuels.

The American Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday the abandonment of two major offshore wind projects involving the French Engie, in line with the Trump government’s energy policy focused on fossil fuels. The decision first concerned Bluepoint Wind, which was supposed to be installed off the coasts of New Jersey and New York and supply electricity to about a million households.

The consortium surrounding Bluepoint Wind included the French Engie, the Portuguese EDP Renewables, and the American investment company Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a BlackRock subsidiary. The Ministry also mentioned the end of another major offshore wind program, Golden State Wind, off the Californian coast between Monterey and Santa Barbara, which was expected to provide electricity to approximately 1.1 million households.

Engie and EDP Renewables were also involved in this consortium through their joint venture Ocean Winds, associated with the investment company Reventus Power, a financial arm in offshore wind of the Canadian pension fund CPPIB. This decision serves as another example of the American government’s policy, openly against the development of new offshore wind capacities in the United States.
