Indonesian Arrested in Thailand for Online Scams Targeting Americans

An Indonesian man sought by the FBI was arrested in Thailand on Sunday for committing large-scale online scams against Americans. The 33-year-old suspect has been placed in custody pending extradition to the United States.

The man was arrested on Friday at a luxury establishment in Phuket following information provided by the FBI, according to Suriya Poungsombat of the immigration police. Thai authorities were informed by the FBI that the suspect had left Dubai and arrived in Thailand on Wednesday.

Southeast Asia, Hub of Cybercrime

The FBI is searching for him as he is suspected of committing “frauds against Americans amounting to approximately 10 million dollars,” added Suriya Poungsombat. Another official from the Thai immigration police stated that the suspect allegedly recruited models to lure his targets into fake financial investments through video calls, dating apps, and social networks. He is said to have orchestrated these scams from the United Arab Emirates.

In recent years, Southeast Asia has become a hub for cybercrime. However, cyber fraudsters and their accomplices have expanded their activities beyond this region. According to a 2025 report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, foreign workers in the United Arab Emirates have been lured and recruited to engage in cybercriminal activities in Southeast Asia. This suggests that “Dubai is becoming a hub for the recruitment and trafficking [of forced laborers] for cybercrime.”
