War in the Middle East: Truce between Israel and Lebanon extended, what about negotiations between the states

On Friday, April 24, 2026, Donald Trump announced an extension of the truce between Israel and Lebanon. What about the negotiations between the United States and Iran?

“Lebanon and Israel have extended the temporary ceasefire by three weeks” between the two countries, announced the American president on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the end of a meeting in Washington between representatives of both countries.

The meeting went very well! The United States will work with Lebanon to help them “protect themselves from Hezbollah,” wrote Donald Trump on his Truth Social network. The American president once again anticipated a meeting at the White House between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Donald Trump declared that there is a “good chance” that Lebanon and Israel will reach a peace agreement this year. The ceasefire between the two countries, which was set to expire on Sunday, April 26, led to a significant decrease in violence, although attacks continued in southern Lebanon.

Wednesday was actually the “most mournful” day in Lebanon since the ceasefire came into effect on April 16. Among the victims of Israeli strikes was Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, according to a senior Lebanese military official and her employer, the newspaper Al-Akhbar.

What about the negotiations between the United States and Iran?

This announcement came as doubts surround “the temporary ceasefire and the negotiations between Washington and Tehran,” two days after Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire indefinitely “to allow for the conclusion of an agreement, while maintaining the maritime blockade of Iran.”

Denouncing an American “stratagem” and violations of the ceasefire, Tehran did not say they accept extending the ceasefire and reiterated their control of the Strait of Hormuz, claiming to have intercepted two ships there. The President of the Iranian Parliament and Tehran’s chief negotiator, Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, said a complete ceasefire would only make sense “with a lifting of the American maritime blockade of Iran.”
