The United States considers striking Iranian military targets in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States is developing new attack plans against Iranian military capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz, according to information from CNN, citing several sources close to the matter. These preparations come just a few days after President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran, granted at the request of Pakistani mediators who sought more time to allow Tehran to come up with a lasting peace proposal with Washington and Israel.

According to the American media, the Pentagon is considering several scenarios, including strikes against Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz, in the southern Persian Gulf, and in the Gulf of Oman. The plans mentioned would target in particular the military means that enable Iran to threaten maritime traffic in this strategic area, especially the fleet of fast boats of the Revolutionary Guards and ships that could be used to lay mines.

Donald Trump hinted at this possibility on Thursday by stating that the US Navy would “shoot and destroy” any boat involved in mining the Strait of Hormuz. The fast boats of the Revolutionary Guards have reportedly largely escaped American and Israeli bombardments that have greatly weakened the conventional Iranian navy. These lightweight vessels, often armed with machine guns, are regularly presented as a tool in Tehran’s asymmetric naval strategy.

According to CNN, another option being considered by American military officials would be to target Iranian military leaders seen by Washington as opposed to an agreement to permanently end the conflict. The United States could also resume strikes against Iran’s remaining military capabilities, including its missile stockpiles and launchers.

Furthermore, Donald Trump has attributed the current stalemate in discussions to internal divisions within the Iranian regime. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that Iran is struggling to determine its leadership, highlighting conflicts between weakened hardliners on the battlefield and what he considers to be less moderate “moderates.” He described the situation as “crazy.”
