American singer Britney Spears has started a detox treatment, US media reported on Sunday, a month after her arrest for driving under the influence in California. The former pop star was arrested in early March and detained in California, before being quickly released, according to public records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office near Los Angeles, which did not specify if she was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“This is an unfortunate and completely inexcusable incident. Britney will take the necessary steps and comply with the law,” one of her representatives reacted in a statement sent to Deadline. Several US media outlets reported on Sunday that the 44-year-old singer had voluntarily entered a detox treatment center, without specifying the exact date of her admission or the reason for her treatment. Britney Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 for her arrest for driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I liked to drink, but I never lost control,” said the singer of “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again,” who dominated the music scene in the 2000s, in her autobiography “The Woman in Me” published in October 2023. She admitted to also taking Adderall, a medication prescribed for attention disorders and belonging to the amphetamine family. She revisits her troubled childhood spent in the shadow of an alcoholic father, her romantic troubles with Justin Timberlake, and the harassment by paparazzi.
After her downward spiral in 2007, the singer was placed under the guardianship of her father Jamie Spears, who controlled her money and private life, while she was performing in Las Vegas. Pushed by her fans, gathered under the slogan “Free Britney,” the pop star eventually rebelled and the American justice system overturned this guardianship in 2021.
