Negotiations between the United States and Iran are progressing but the two belligerents now explain that an agreement on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz may take a few more days. American officials express their optimism, while recognizing that points remain to be resolved and that they could derail the discussions. An Iranian delegation arrived this Monday in Qatar, a country which has already played a key role in negotiations between the United States and Iran. The governor of the Central Bank of Iran made the trip. The question of unlocking Iranian assets frozen abroad is crucial for Tehran.

For Donald Trump, the urgency is to reach an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the paralysis of which has been putting the world economy under pressure for almost three months. The American president has had to resolve to postpone the most thorny questions such as that of Iranian nuclear power to future negotiations which will only begin after the re-establishment of maritime traffic. The discussions promise to be long and complex. “We cannot resolve a nuclear issue in 72 hours on the corner of a table,” recognizes Marco Rubio, the American Secretary of State. The Obama administration needed two years of negotiations with Iran before reaching the 2015 Vienna Accord that limited Iran’s nuclear program.

The war failed in its main objective

Donald Trump, who tore it up in 2018, finds himself forced to have to renegotiate it after noting that the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28 had failed in its first objective, which was to annihilate Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Time is running out for the American president who wants to put an end to hostilities before the start of the Football World Cup on June 11 in the United States and before the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4. Donald Trump must also avoid at all costs approaching the mid-term elections next November with the price of a gallon of gasoline at $4.55 (1.03 euros per liter), when he promised to drop it to $2 (0.45 euros per liter).
