As fans await the release of season 3 of House of the Dragon on HBO Max, new posters have been revealed to help viewers keep track.
For several years, HBO has been exploring the fantastical and bloody universe created by George R.R. Martin, the writer behind Game of Thrones. It’s always a good thing when this exploration leads to excellent surprises, like the series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is as astonishing as it is refreshing. Other stories are set to be brought to the screen, particularly in cinema with a film about Aegon the Conqueror on the way.
But before delving into new stories, a series is already in the works: House of the Dragon, centering on the notorious Targaryen family. While fans eagerly anticipate season 3, especially after the trailer released in April, HBO has unveiled a collection of posters dedicated to the main (and not-so-main) characters, all in a dire state.
House of the Dragon on fire
The 18 new posters for season 3 of House of the Dragon show the characters in terrible conditions, clearly affected by the events of the Dance of Dragons. It’s evident that this series won’t end in a fairy-tale happy ending, partly because that’s not the kind of story told by George R.R. Martin, and especially because the downfall of the Targaryen family is already well documented in Game of Thrones, almost 170 years later.
This new season will be a chance to reconnect with several characters featured on the posters and at the heart of the Targaryen intrigues, like Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his enemy-brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), or Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) who is ready to do whatever it takes to rule. Expect some newcomers to play significant roles in the narrative, such as James Norton portraying Ormund Hightower.
The season 3 of the series should take us deeper into the conflict of the Dance of Dragons, which is already well underway. Besides the two main factions, the Greens (led by Alicent Hightower) and the Blacks (loyal to Rhaenyra), a third faction might emerge in the power struggles. Of course, the rivalry between the brothers Aemond and Aegon is far from over, and the escaped ex-king’s flight might further enrage him.
The airing of season 3 of House of the Dragon will begin on June 22 on HBO Max in France, with 8 episodes airing until early August. And as a reminder, the series will conclude with season 4 in 2028, so the end is near.
