BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana voters are headed to June runoffs in both the Republican and Democratic primaries for the U.S. Senate after Saturday’s statewide election under the state’s new closed primary system.

On the Republican side, Julia Letlow finished first with more than 40% of the vote. John Fleming captured the second spot, knocking incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy out of the runoff, according to unofficial results. Cassidy conceded the election during an address to supporters in Baton Rouge Saturday evening.

On the Democratic side, Jamie Davis had a clear lead to advance to the runoff. The second runoff spot was too close to call as of 11 p.m. Saturday, with Nick Albares and Gary Crockett each reporting about 26% of the vote and fewer than 400 votes separating the two candidates.

Under Louisiana’s new closed primary format, voters cast ballots within their registered party. The Republican and Democratic winners in June will move on to a November general election, which could also include no-party candidates.

Saturday’s ballot also included five proposed constitutional amendments, and all five failed, including a proposal tied to teacher pay raises and the proposed creation of a new school system for the city of St. George in East Baton Rouge Parish.
