When asked about his favorite candidate to resume dialogue with the Europeans, Vladimir Putin replied that he personally preferred Gerhard Schröder. The former German chancellor, in power from 1998 to 2005, has been a loyal supporter of the Kremlin leader for twenty years. He had notably refused to condemn the Russian invasion in 2022.

“We have taken note of these statements,” said government sources on Sunday, adding that Berlin sees them as part of a series of false Russian offers. They also mentioned that “a first test of credibility would be if Russia extends the ceasefire.”
