ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) – A double shooting at an Elkhart apartment complex seemed to be related to a house fire that brought a large police presence to the northwest part of the county, as per police.
Authorities were summoned to The Highlands Apartments near Cassopolis Street for a shooting around 2:00 p.m. They discovered a man inside an apartment with gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A woman was also found outside the apartment with gunshot wounds and is currently hospitalized.
Shortly after the shooting, a house fire on Golden Pond Drive resulted in a significant response from police, SWAT, and the bomb squad. Following the extinguishment of the fire, a body was found inside, but no official identification has been announced yet.
Neighbors expressed shock at the scene, as the Elkhart County Regional Bomb squad, SWAT, police, and multiple fire departments responded to the incident. Schools in the vicinity also took precautionary measures due to the potential connection of the shooting suspect to the school communities of Horizon Elementary and Discovery Middle School.
A SWAT team eventually entered the house with guns drawn, and crime scene tape was put up by 7:26 p.m. Neighbors reflected on the tragic situation and expressed hope for its resolution and the safety of their community.
