The Beijing Motor Show has scaled up for its 2026 edition, spanning 380,000 square meters of exhibition space across seventeen halls. For the first time, the biennial event is being held simultaneously at two adjacent sites near the capital’s airport, including the new International Exhibition Center established in February 2025, to create the world’s largest auto show. Professionals, distributors, journalists, influencers, and curious onlookers are flocking to see the 1,451 cars on display, including 181 global premieres.

Industry leaders are showcasing themselves as selling points in the battle for attention where innovation is key. From Lei Jun of Xiaomi with his Vision Gran Turismo supercar to Stella Li and Wang Chuanfu of the leading electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, the event is a platform for unveiling cutting-edge technology and products.

The heightened competition stems from a saturated Chinese market, with brands launching new models to stand out. The focus is not just on presenting viable vehicles but on capturing attention at all costs. The show acts as a massive commercial funnel aiming to attract a maximum number of visitors, even if the conversion rate remains low.

The spotlight at the show is on large electric SUVs, offering spacious interiors, advanced technology, and premium features to appeal to Chinese consumers. These oversized models help brands enhance their reputation and elevate their image in a competitive market with pressure on profit margins.

In a shift from price-based competition to technology-driven innovation, companies are introducing cutting-edge features like LiDAR scanning systems, non-glare headlights, and interactive entertainment systems in vehicles to cater to evolving consumer demands.

François Marion, Valeo’s communication director, believes that the new focus is on technological advancements rather than pricing strategies. Valeo is showcasing innovations such as a rotating LiDAR laser system, adaptive headlights, and a video game system to enhance the driving experience.
