San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama engaged in some light cardiovascular work Wednesday evening, with reports indicating that his concussion symptoms did not worsen – a crucial step towards his potential return to the court. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Wembanyama is “hopeful” to accompany the team to Portland on Thursday.

The status of Wembanyama for Game 3 on Friday remains uncertain. The light activity he participated in on Wednesday was just one of the initial steps mandated by the NBA’s return-to-play protocol.

The Spurs suffered a setback on Tuesday night when Wembanyama exited early after a hard fall that resulted in a concussion. Head coach Mitch Johnson confirmed the diagnosis after the game, stating that Wembanyama was immediately placed in concussion protocol and ruled out for the rest of the game.

The exact timeline for his recovery is currently unknown. NBA regulations dictate that a player diagnosed with a concussion must wait at least 48 hours before returning to play. Additionally, the player must complete the necessary return-to-participation process and receive clearance from a team doctor. Some level of activity is allowed after 24 hours.

While the average recovery time for NBA players dealing with concussions ranges from seven to 10 days, it remains uncertain how long Wembanyama will be sidelined. Coach Johnson emphasized the importance of following the proper steps for Wembanyama’s recovery.

Despite the concussion, the Spurs are not concerned about any additional injuries beyond that. Wembanyama did not require a hospital visit following the game.

In a Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers, Wembanyama fell awkwardly after colliding with Jrue Holiday in the second quarter. His chin hit the court, prompting immediate medical attention and his removal from the game.

Wembanyama, who had been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, had brought valuable contributions to the Spurs in the series. As the team heads to Portland for Game 3, the absence of Wembanyama due to the concussion could significantly impact the outcome of the games ahead.
