This junior rendition of the beloved Broadway adaptation is a 60-minute musical designed for middle school performers. It is based on the 1992 Disney film “Newsies” and the 2012 Broadway production of the same name. The cast comprises 65 students in grades 5 to 12, under the direction of Carolyn Behr-Jerome and David Erlandson.

The story follows Jack Kelly (played by Corbin Stoudmire), a charismatic newsboy and leader of a group of young newsies in Manhattan. When publishing giants raise distribution costs, Jack mobilizes young workers from all over the city to protest the unfair conditions and fight for justice. The show also features performances by Rebekah Sullivan as Katherine Plummer, Zane Jerome as Davey, and Noah Erlandson as Crutchie.

Tailored for young actors, the musical boasts a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, along with a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Iconic songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “King of New York” are part of the repertoire.

Audiences have hailed “Disney’s Newsies, Jr.” as a thrilling production with a timeless message that appeals to all ages.

Behr-Jerome commended the hard work and dedication of the cast and everyone involved in bringing the production to life. Senior cast member Rebekah Sullivan, who plays Katherine, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the team.

It seems like a special weekend in store at Cornerstone. Best of luck to all the newsies!
