A gunman in Louisiana killed eight children, including seven of his own, and shot two other people before being killed by police. The attack happened in Shreveport on Sunday morning. The victims were between one and about 12 years old. One of the wounded adults was the suspect’s children’s mother.

The suspect, Shamar Elkins, died after a police chase. Police shot at him after he carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint. The motive for the violence is still under investigation, but authorities believe it was a domestic incident.

Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon said, “This is an extensive scene, unlike anything most of us have ever seen.” Elkins had previous interactions with police and was arrested in 2019 for a firearms case.

    ‘Thoughts and prayers’

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called it a tragic situation. US House Speaker Mike Johnson and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims and their families.

Excluding this incident, there have been at least 119 mass shootings in the US this year, resulting in 117 deaths and 458 injuries, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident where at least four people, excluding the shooter, are injured or killed by gunfire. Last year, there were 407 mass shootings in the US.
