The New Jersey Transit Police Department held its annual emergency response drill at MetLife Stadium in preparation for the FIFA World Cup, anticipating large crowds on NJ Transit trains and buses. The drill simulated a transportation incident with first responders from various departments participating.
Heavy smoke from a train fire filled the station as responders evacuated and triaged passengers. Officials emphasized the importance of handling the situation effectively, especially with fans from around the world expected to use mass transit.
Multiple agencies collaborated during the drill, using drones, cadaver dummies, and role-playing to create a realistic scenario. With heightened security concerns globally, officials highlighted the importance of thorough preparations for the event.
NJ Transit Police Department is also identifying multilingual officers to handle diverse crowds during the World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium. Tickets for the matches will cost $150 for round-trip transit and $80 for shuttle buses, with no parking available at the stadium for security reasons.
The agencies involved in the emergency drills included New Jersey Transit Police, Meadowlands Fire Department, NJ State Police, and various others. Overall, preparations will continue leading up to the World Cup matches in June.
